Well 2018 has had an amazing start!
As director of Rubix I thought it was about time I started to write a more regular blog. Time passes so quickly, we forget how good reflection is for us as people and our work.
The year as always kicked off with me working in conjunction with The Birmingham Hippodrome, for Sir Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures. This year’s curtain raiser will be performed before the performance of Cinderella. The 5 week creation process involves working with a brand new young dance company made up of dancers from 5 local colleges, along with 3 young choreographers. With 2 more weeks to go, it’s getting so tense but unbelievably exciting too. I’ll be giving a more in-depth insight into the project over the last few weeks.
I’ve had chance to work with some fantastic schools already in the last 4 weeks. Including Bassingbourn Village College in Hertfordshire, where I helped to deliver the new GCSE dance set phrases to both year 10&11 pupils. Whilst Down in Slough I got chance to work with 40 Reception pupils, exploring the work of Hans Zimmer, through movement and exploration of animals from the Lion King.
I’ve had a fantastic time working collaborating with with Emma Woods and Garry Clarke. Along with the amazing Julie Bowers at The Bristish Ballet Organisation, as we’ve ben developing the new Grade 3 Musical Theatre Syallbus. Ready to launch very soon... watch this space!
Last year saw one of the toughest tasks given to me in my 18 year career so far. Being asked to write a new contemporary dance syllabus for the Associated Board of Dance. With many tears, tantrums, self doubt of my own ability, moments of eureka and not to mention so many sleepless nights, Grades 1-3 were launched in the summer of 2017. January 2018 saw the first course for Grades 4&5 finally delivered to teachers. It was.... a HUGE success. Overwhelming and yet more tears were shed, mainly through relief and being so grateful that it I was given such a wonderful opportunity.
As January has come to a close myself and the teachers at our Performance Hub are so excited to see what the year ahead of us will bring. Already our weekly classes are building, a huge interest has been shown in our half term fun day. Plus we are starting to put plans in place for the summer!
January 2018... you’ve been amazing! Let’s hope we continue for the next 11 months ahead!
I continue to stay grateful for being able to do a job that I truly love, have the people around who work with/support me. Yet still be able to pass on my knowledge and passion to others.
Keep moving, keep creative!
